The Sunburst Anthias (Serranocirrhitus latus) is a deep-bodied anthias with a pink-to-orange base color, yellow scale edging, and fine contrasting facial lines. In reef tanks it’s best known for staying close to rockwork, where it “perches” near caves and overhangs and adds steady color to the lower half of the aquascape.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hanging under ledges and along cave openings, often returning to the same shelter day after day
- Short, quick swims out from the rockwork, then settling back into a favorite perch
- Most activity around feeding time, with repeated dashes to intercept small foods in the water column
- A calm presence that keeps to its own space rather than cruising the whole tank
To succeed, provide layered rockwork with shaded overhangs and open cave mouths so it can choose a consistent perch. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, enriched brine, and other fine frozen blends) in steady, repeatable feedings so it learns your routine. Maintain a peaceful community where tankmates don’t crowd its feeding lane.
Can a Sunburst Anthias be kept as a single fish?
Yes—many aquarists keep one as a “cave-perching” centerpiece that holds a small home area in the rockwork.
Is it normal to see it swimming upside down under an overhang?
Yes—this species commonly cruises and feeds under ledges and cave ceilings, including upside-down passes.
Will it accept pellets long-term?
Many will, especially small sinking pellets introduced alongside frozen foods and delivered near its usual perch.
How long does it take to become visible in the tank?
It often starts out staying tight to the rockwork, then spends longer periods out once it recognizes the feeding schedule and preferred perch spots.
Does it need a lid like other anthias?
A screen top is a good choice, since quick dashes during feeding or lighting changes can lead to upward launches.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
