The Purple Tilefish (Hoplolatilus purpureus), also called the purple sand tilefish, is a slender sand-slope tilefish from the western central Pacific. It reaches about 5 inches and is most often seen cruising above sand and rubble near the seaward side of reef structure.
What You’ll Observe:
- A calm hover-and-cruise swimming style in the middle to upper water column, often returning to the same “home” area
- Quick, smooth dashes back to a chosen shelter spot when startled, then reappearing once the tank settles
- Strong food awareness—many keepers notice it starts showing up predictably right before feeding time
- Regular “patrol loops” along the sand edge near rockwork, pausing to watch activity in the tank
Provide a deeper, fine sand zone with stable rockwork so it can claim a consistent retreat spot, and keep early lighting and traffic around the tank calm during acclimation. Offer small meaty foods (and a quality pellet once it’s settled) in the water column so it can feed naturally. A tight-fitting lid supports its natural quick-dart behavior and helps it remain confident in open water.
How long does it usually take a Purple Tilefish to “settle in”?
Many hobbyists report the first 1–2 weeks are when routines become predictable—once it learns your lighting and feeding schedule, it typically spends more time out in the open.
Is it normal for a Purple Tilefish to rest on the bottom between short swims?
Some keepers observe brief “pause and rest” periods, especially in smaller holding or quarantine setups; if it’s still eating strongly, stable conditions and time often help normalize its daily rhythm.
Will it use an auto-feeder reliably?
Many owners find they can train it to respond to consistent feeding times; once it recognizes the schedule, it often waits near the usual feeding area.
Can I keep it with other tilefish (or a second Purple Tilefish)?
Reports are mixed—some aquarists keep tilefish groups successfully, while others see tension when similar species share the same open-water zone; the most consistent results come from giving each fish clear space and defined “home” areas.
Does it spend most of its time hiding, or is it an “out and about” fish?
Once established, it’s commonly described as an open-water cruiser that retreats quickly when startled, then returns to the water column when the tank is calm.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
