The Vanderbilt Lyretail Chromis Damsel (Chromis vanderbilti) is a small, reef-compatible chromis with a blue body, yellow striping, and extended lyretail tips. It adds steady mid-water movement and tends to stay visible above and around the rockwork.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruises in the upper to mid water column, often hovering in open areas
- Makes quick dashes into the rocks, then returns to the water column
- Comes out rapidly at feeding time and joins the “feeding cloud”
- Uses flow lines (returns/powerheads) as a “track” and holds position in the current
Provide open swimming room with rockwork that creates multiple quick retreat paths. Offer a varied mix of small foods (fine pellets, mysis, and other frozen blends) so it can take bites throughout the day. This fish fits best with peaceful community tankmates that leave it space in the water column.
Do Vanderbilt Chromis always stay bright blue and yellow?
Many keepers report they can look darker from a distance or under lower light, then show more contrast up close.
Is it normal to see quick chasing right before lights go down?
Brief dusk “sorting-out” behavior is commonly observed in chromis and usually settles once the lights are fully off.
Where do they sleep at night?
Most will tuck into crevices or hover close to rockwork once the tank is in night mode.
Do they like high flow areas?
They’re often observed holding steady in stronger flow and then darting out to grab food as it passes.
Do chromis help other fish come out more?
Active mid-water fish like chromis are frequently used as “dither” fish, and many hobbyists feel their constant movement makes a reef look more active overall.
