The Waitei (Sherbert) Anthias (Luzonichthys waitei), also known as the Magenta Slender Anthias, is a small reef fish with an elongated profile and a distinct “split” look to the dorsal fin. Its body shows a mix of orange, purple, red, and yellow tones that read clearly under typical reef lighting. It’s a peaceful, reef-safe anthias that fits best in calm community reef tanks.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hanging in the water column near rock ledges, then making short, smooth passes into open water
- A consistent “hover and glide” swimming style rather than constant laps around the tank
- Quick, organized responses at feeding time’especially when small foods stay suspended
- Most activity during the day, with regular returns to the same favorite overhangs and caves
Provide open swimming room along the front plus plenty of rockwork shelves and shaded pockets so it always has a nearby retreat. Offer small meaty foods in multiple small feedings so it can graze naturally throughout the day. If you’re keeping more than one, introducing them together and spreading food across the tank helps the group settle into a steady routine.
Do Waitei Anthias males and females look different?
In this genus, males and females are hard to tell apart by color alone, so most hobbyists choose specimens by size and overall body condition rather than pattern.
How long does it take for them to act “out in the open”?
It’s common for them to spend more time around rock ledges early on, then become more consistently visible as they learn the tank’s feeding schedule and preferred shelter spots.
Do they usually learn to eat pellets?
Many aquarists start with small frozen foods, then mix in very small pellets once the fish is eating confidently; frequent, tiny portions tend to work better than one large feeding.
Will a Waitei Anthias school tightly with others?
They often stay loosely grouped and oriented to the same zone of the tank (rather than forming a tight ball), especially when they have multiple ledges to share.
Can I mix Waitei Anthias with other anthias species?
Mixing is often simplest when you choose similarly peaceful anthias and ensure both groups have enough “lanes” and ledges, so they can share the water column without crowding each other.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
