The Warthead Blenny (Protemblemaria bicirrus) is a small tube blenny that lives tight to rockwork, often showing just its head and facial cirri from a chosen opening. It comes from rocky reefs in the eastern Pacific and stays compact, topping out around 2 inches.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picks a “home” hole and regularly peeks out to watch activity in the room
- Makes quick, direct feeding dashes into the water column, then returns to cover
- Perches at the entrance of its crevice like a lookout, especially near feeding time
- Shifts between nearby openings as it explores the rockwork
To do well, provide mature live rock with multiple narrow crevices (a small barnacle cluster also works well as a ready-made home). Feed small meaty foods in brief pulses so it can intercept bites from the water column. In a calm reef layout with plenty of cover, you’ll see it settle into a consistent routine.
Do I need to add barnacle shells, or will it use regular rock holes?
It will use rock crevices, but barnacle clusters make instant “ready-to-use” homes.
Is it normal if I only see its head most of the day?
Yes’this species commonly stations at an opening and watches from cover.
Will it move to a different spot after it settles in?
It can rotate between a few nearby openings, especially after rearranging rockwork.
Can I keep more than one if I have lots of holes?
Often yes if each has its own openings, with space between “home” sites.
Do they jump?
A snug lid or screen top helps, especially on smaller aquariums.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
