The Whipfin Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus filamentosus) is a reef-safe fairy wrasse known for a long dorsal “whip” filament and shifting red, orange, and blue tones that change with mood and display. It’s an active water-column swimmer that brings steady motion to the middle and upper areas of a reef tank.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrols open water and makes quick, controlled darts back into rockwork between laps
- Becomes most visible around feeding time, tracking foods in the current
- Short “flashing” displays where colors intensify, especially when it notices other wrasses
- Picks a favorite sleep spot in the rockwork each evening and returns there consistently
Provide open swimming space with rock ledges and caves so it can cruise and reset between passes. Offer a mix of small meaty frozen foods and quality pellets, split into a few small feedings for best consistency. If you plan to keep multiple wrasses, introducing this fish with an acclimation box helps everyone settle into a routine quickly.
Does it need sand to sleep at night?
Most whipfin-type fairy wrasses choose a rock crevice to sleep in, so a sand bed isn’t required as long as there are secure hideouts.
Can I keep it with other fairy or flasher wrasses?
It usually does best when introduced with a clear “personal space” plan (extra rock breaks, multiple hiding areas) and a slow introduction so other wrasses adjust to its presence.
When will it show its best color and fin extensions?
After it settles into a consistent feeding rhythm, color intensity typically improves over the next few weeks, with larger males showing the strongest filament development.
Why does it look different throughout the day?
Daily shifts in lighting, social activity, and display behavior can change how the reds/blues present, especially during brief flashing moments.
Will it take prepared foods like pellets?
Many do once they recognize the feeding routine; mixing pellets into frozen foods for a week or two often speeds up the transition.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
