The Whitecap Goby & Pistol Shrimp Pair is a shrimp-associated goby (Lotilia graciliosa) offered with an Alpheus pistol shrimp to recreate the classic burrow-sharing partnership in a reef tank. The goby’s clean “whitecap” markings stand out best over fine sand and rubble as the shrimp builds and maintains the home.
What You’ll Observe:
- The shrimp moving sand and shell bits to shape a burrow, with the goby posted at the entrance
- Quick dashes into the open at feeding time, then a return to the same doorway “station”
- A steadily changing burrow layout as the pair expands tunnels and refreshes the entrance
Provide a fine sand bed with small rubble pieces and place rock structures securely so digging doesn’t undermine them. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and other finely sized frozen options) so the goby can grab bites without long competition. With a consistent feeding spot and a calm area to claim, the pair settles into a predictable daily routine.
How long is it normal to go without seeing the goby or shrimp?
Many pairs stay out of view at first; ongoing sand movement near one spot is usually a good sign they’ve set up.
Is the pistol shrimp “clicking” something to worry about?
Clicking/snapping is a normal behavior, and how often you hear it varies by shrimp and tank setup.
Will they bury frags or cover corals with sand?
They can toss sand near the burrow entrance; keeping frags on stable rock and leaving an open sand zone helps.
Do they need to be a specific goby/shrimp combo to pair up?
Shrimp-associated gobies often partner best when already paired or when matched with compatible Alpheus-type pistols.
Why does the goby hover at the burrow and flick its fins?
That “doorway guard” posture is typical of watchman-style behavior and is part of how the pair coordinates around the burrow.
