This dwarf angelfish is an active grazer that naturally picks at film algae and growth on live rock. Woodhead’s (Black Tip) Angelfish is typically bright yellow with a darker “black tip”/black edging along the dorsal fin, giving it a clean, high-contrast look in a reef tank. It’s commonly associated with the Yellow & Black Heraldi-type forms seen in the hobby.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady rockwork patrols, stopping often to peck and graze throughout the day
- A favorite “home cave” it returns to on a regular schedule, especially at dusk
- Short, confident laps into open water between grazing stops
- More visible, bolder behavior once it recognizes your feeding routine
To succeed, provide mature live rock and multiple caves so it can graze and settle into a territory. Offer a mixed omnivore menu (algae-based foods plus small meaty items) in smaller portions across the day to match its natural pick-and-graze style. Does best when introduced to a stable community where it can claim rockwork and establish a routine.
Will the black dorsal “tip” stay dark in aquariums?
Some keepers report the black edging can soften or partially fade after acclimation, especially as lighting and diet change.
Is it normal if it pecks at rock and glass all day?
Yes’constant picking is typical browsing behavior and is part of how dwarf angels stay busy and well-fed.
Will it disappear into the rockwork for a while after being added?
Often, yes. Many settle in by choosing a cave first, then expanding their patrol route as they get comfortable.
How do you get it to accept prepared foods quickly?
Start with frozen foods it can “chase” (like mysis) and add algae-based foods; many learn pellets once they associate you with feeding.
Why does it look more yellow (or more black-edged) under different lights?
Blue-heavy reef lighting can change how the edge markings and facial shading show up compared to white lighting and photos.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
