Yellow Banded Possum Wrasse (Wetmorella nigropinnata) is a small, reef-safe wrasse that spends most of its time weaving through rock crevices and shaded ledges. Its reddish base color is broken up by thin yellow banding that stays visible even when it is moving in and out of cover.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrols the rockwork with short, stop-and-go movements, pausing to inspect holes and overhangs
- Shows up reliably at feeding time, then returns to the rockscape to browse between meals
- Picks repeatedly at the surface of live rock, focusing on tiny cracks and sheltered spots
- Develops a consistent “route” through the same caves and corners once it settles in
Provide a mature reef with plenty of live rock caves and overhangs so it can move in and out of cover throughout the day. Offer small meaty foods in small portions and let some drift into the rockwork where it naturally forages. If your tank has fast eaters, feeding in two areas helps this wrasse stay engaged and present at mealtime.
Is it normal for a new Yellow Banded Possum Wrasse to “vanish” for a while?
Yes—many spend a lot of time inside the rockwork at first and become more consistently visible once they learn the tank’s feeding routine.
Does it need sand to sleep like some other wrasses?
Most possum wrasses rest by wedging into rock crevices rather than burying, so a sand bed is optional as long as there’s secure rockwork with pockets and ledges.
Why does it sometimes hover nose-first into a hole or corner?
That’s a common “inspection” posture while it searches tight spaces and uses cover, especially around its preferred hangout zones.
Will it take prepared foods right away, or does it need time to recognize them?
Many do best when foods are small (fine mysis, roe-sized blends, calanus/copepod-sized items) and delivered near the rockwork so it can grab pieces as they pass.
Can it live with more assertive wrasses (like a sixline) if the tank is otherwise peaceful?
It typically settles best when it has plenty of rock structure and enough space that it can follow its own route without having to compete closely at the same feeding spot.
