The Yellow Clown Goby (Gobiodon okinawae) is a small, reef-associated goby known for its solid yellow color and “perching” style—often sitting on rockwork or coral branches in full view. Native to Indo-Pacific reefs, it stays compact in the aquarium and is a popular nano fish choice for mixed reef displays.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a favorite perch and returning to it throughout the day
- Short, quick darting swims followed by hovering and resting
- Taking small meaty foods from the water column during feeding time
- In pairs, spending long stretches close together in the same area
To help it settle in, provide plenty of branching “perch” options (rock fingers, coral skeleton, or branching corals) and offer small meaty foods like mysis or finely chopped frozen blends on a steady routine. In SPS-heavy tanks, plan for it to spend time among branches; it may occasionally nip at small polyps, so giving multiple perch zones helps spread out that attention.
Will a Yellow Clown Goby “host” one specific coral or spot?
Many will pick a single favorite perch and treat it like home base, returning there between short swims.
Why does it seem to “sit” so much instead of swimming all day?
Perching is normal behavior for coral gobies; they often watch the tank from one spot and then make quick, short moves.
Can I keep two Yellow Clown Gobies together long-term?
It usually works best when they settle as a pair with multiple perching areas, rather than being forced to share one small favorite spot.
Will it take pellets right away?
Some learn quickly, but most do best when you start with small frozen foods and then mix in tiny pellets once it’s feeding confidently.
Is it normal for it to disappear for a day or two after introduction?
Yes—many spend early time tucked into rockwork, then begin perching out in the open once they recognize the tank as safe.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
