The Yellow Dusky Dottyback (Pseudochromis fuscus) is a compact “yellow dottyback” known for living tight to the rockwork and moving in quick, confident bursts. Found across Indo-Pacific reef areas, it’s often kept as a reef-compatible dottyback that adds constant motion around caves and ledges.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short patrols from a favorite rock crevice, then fast darts back into cover
- Regular “peeking” behavior from holes and overhangs, especially as it learns the tank
- A consistent loop around its chosen area of rockwork throughout the day
- A quick, direct feeding response once it recognizes your routine
Provide a 30-gallon or larger tank with multiple rock crevices so it can claim a home base while still having open lanes to swim. Offer meaty foods like mysis, finely chopped seafood, and quality frozen blends on a steady schedule. A snug lid or screen top helps keep active jumpers in the aquarium so it can settle in and stay on display.
Should I add the Yellow Dusky Dottyback early or late in my stocking plan?
Many hobbyists add it later so it can settle into one area without immediately trying to “own” the whole rock structure.
Is it normal for it to stay in the rocks at first?
Yes—keepers commonly report an initial “home-cave” phase, followed by longer patrols as it learns where food appears.
Can I keep two Yellow Dusky Dottybacks together?
Most people keep a single specimen; pairs are typically attempted only as a confirmed male/female pair with plenty of rockwork and space.
Will it go after ornamental shrimp if I have them?
Hobbyists frequently report dottybacks may treat smaller ornamental shrimp as food; heavy rock cover can improve day-to-day coexisting behavior.
Do I need a lid or screen top?
Many keepers mention dottybacks can jump, especially during the first few weeks, so a fitted cover helps them stay settled in the tank.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
