The Yellow-Edge Brown Chromis (Azurina multilineata) is a schooling chromis damselfish with a gray-brown body, a distinct black spot at the pectoral-fin base, and yellow edging along the dorsal and tail fins. In the wild it forms feeding groups above reef structure where it rises into open water to pick plankton from the water column.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruises the upper half of the tank and “hovers” above rockwork before making quick dashes into open water
- Shows the most visible activity during daylight hours, especially around regular feeding times
- In groups, you’ll often see loose formation swimming rather than a tight, synchronized school
- During breeding periods, pairs may spend more time near a chosen surface on the rockwork
How to Succeed: Provide open swimming room with rockwork that creates a clear “reef edge” for the fish to patrol. Offer small, plankton-sized foods (like finely chopped frozen blends and small pellets) in multiple small feedings so it can feed naturally in the water column. With multiple chromis, add them together and keep a consistent routine so they settle into predictable spacing and feeding patterns.
Why did the yellow edging look faded right after introduction?
It’s common for chromis coloration to look muted during the first several days; consistent lighting, regular feeding, and a steady routine usually bring the contrast back as it settles in.
Where do they usually sleep at night?
Many chromis wedge into rock gaps or hover close to the rockwork after lights-out, often returning to the same general area each evening.
Is it normal for one fish to “own” a specific spot in the water column?
Yes—within a group you’ll often notice one fish repeatedly taking the same high point or corner, especially near the flow it prefers.
Do they take prepared foods right away, or should I start with frozen?
A lot of keepers start with frozen foods to trigger strong feeding response, then mix in small pellets/flake until the fish is taking both confidently.
Do they jump?
They’re open-water swimmers that can bolt upward when startled, so a tight lid or mesh cover helps keep day-to-day activity stress-free.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
