The Yellow-Green Goby (Priolepis aureoviridis) is a compact reef goby with a yellow-to-yellow-green body tone and a “cave goby” style of perching in the rockwork. It’s native to central Pacific reefs and is known for spending much of its time tucked into shaded ledges.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a favorite crevice and returning to the same perch repeatedly
- Hanging under overhangs and occasionally perching upside down beneath rock ledges
- Long “quiet stretches” where it stays deep in the rockwork, followed by sudden reappearances at the front glass
- Short, quick dashes into open water, then a return to cover
Provide a rockscape with multiple small caves, narrow gaps, and shaded undersides so it can choose a secure home base. Feed so that food drifts past its preferred perch (many keepers find it learns the routine and pops out on schedule). It does best when it isn’t crowded out at mealtime by fast, high-energy feeders.
How long can one stay “missing” in the rockwork?
It’s common for Priolepis-type gobies to stay hidden for long stretches and then reappear once they’re fully settled and comfortable.
Is it normal to see it perched upside down?
Yes—multiple hobbyists report Priolepis gobies choosing the underside of ledges and caves as their main “hangout” spot.
Why does it seem active only at certain times of day?
Many owners notice a “schedule” where the fish is most visible around predictable tank activity (especially when it anticipates feeding).
Will it compete well in a busy community reef?
It usually does best when food is delivered near its chosen crevice so it can grab bites without needing to race across the tank.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
