The Yellowline Goby (Elacatinus figaro) is a small nano reef fish with a dark body and two clean yellow stripes that run from the face to the tail. It spends much of the day out in the open, moving between rockwork, sponge-like textures, and other tight cover where it can duck into a crevice quickly.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, quick “perch and dash” movements, often returning to the same favorite spot
- Regular cruising along the rockwork and glass, especially when food is in the water
- Confident presence in a community reef, with lots of time spent in clear view
- Interest in tiny gaps, shells, and ledges that create small territories
To help it settle in, provide live rock with several small caves and narrow ledges it can claim as a home base. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis or brine) plus fine pellets so it can grab bites throughout the day. In most tanks it does best as a single specimen unless you’re intentionally keeping a confirmed pair.
Will a Yellowline Goby clean parasites off other fish?
Some individuals may show light “cleaner” behavior, but most should be kept well-fed on prepared foods rather than relied on for cleaning.
Do I need a lid or mesh top?
A snug cover is commonly used for small gobies, especially on nano reefs with rear chambers or small gaps.
Can I keep a Yellowline Goby with a Watchman Goby?
Many hobbyists mix them successfully because they tend to use different zones (the Yellowline roams rockwork while watchman-type gobies stay near a burrow).
Why is the yellow stripe fading or turning pale near the head?
Keepers often report temporary color shifts related to lighting, stress, or settling in; consistent feeding and stable parameters usually bring normal coloration back over time.
Do they spawn in home aquariums?
Yes—pairs may lay eggs in a protected crevice or an empty shell, and the site is typically guarded closely for a short period.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
