The Yellowtail Reef Basslet (Liopropoma mitratum) is a small, reef-associated basslet known for a streamlined basslet shape with fine striping and a distinct yellow tail accent. It’s often kept as a “deepwater-style” cave fish that adds motion and color close to the rockwork rather than staying in open water.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering and “perching” near the rock face, then backing into a favorite crevice between swims
- A pattern of peeking out more frequently once it learns your feeding routine
- Short, quick dashes to grab meaty foods from the water column before returning to cover
- A noticeable preference for a particular cave or overhang as its home base
To succeed with this basslet, provide an established aquascape with multiple caves/overhangs so it can choose a secure home and still move around confidently. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and other frozen carnivore fare) consistently so it associates your presence with feeding time. In mixed “basslet-heavy” tanks, adding this fish after territories are already defined helps reduce cave disputes.
Why is my basslet hiding all day at first?
It’s common for Liopropoma basslets to spend their first stretch of time staying deep in the rockwork, then gradually appear more often as they learn the tank’s rhythms.
What’s the best way to confirm it’s eating if I rarely see it?
Many keepers watch for it to make short, fast feeding dashes at the same spot each day; using a consistent feeding location can make this easier to verify.
Can I keep it with other basslets if my tank has lots of rock?
It can work when each fish can claim its own cave network; most hobbyist discussions focus on planning territories and not expecting different basslets to share the same “home” area.
Will it bother ornamental shrimp if shrimp are established first?
Hobbyists often describe these basslets as reef-compatible but opportunistic around very small shrimp; larger established shrimp are typically treated as tankmates rather than food.
Does it become more visible in lower light or “dusk” periods?
Many reefers report seeing basslets cruise out more during calmer lighting periods and around feeding time, especially when the rockwork has shaded ledges.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
