The Blue Gudgeon Dartfish: Lyretail (Ptereleotris hanae) is a slender “threadfin dart goby” commonly seen hovering over sand and rubble zones, showing a pale blue-to-green body with a lyretail tail and extended fin streamers. In nature it’s closely tied to burrows, and in aquariums it often chooses a favorite hole and returns to it throughout the day.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering in the water column a few inches to a couple feet above its chosen burrow area
- A consistent “home base” behavior—darting back to the same opening when startled
- Pair behavior when kept as a matched duo, often occupying the same general hideout
- Quick, precise feeding strikes at small meaty foods drifting in the current
Provide a sand bottom with some small rubble so it can settle into a burrow-style lifestyle, along with open swimming room in front of the rockwork. Offer small, meaty foods (like mysis/brine and other finely chopped marine fare) on a steady daily routine so it can feed from the water column with confidence. Maintain a tight-fitting lid so the tank stays fully enclosed during active darting and fast starts.
Will it stay hidden at first, and when does it usually become more visible?
Many keepers report an initial “stay close to the burrow” period, followed by more frequent hovering in the open water column once it learns the tank’s daily rhythm.
Do they do better as a single fish or as a pair?
Hobbyists often prefer buying an already-paired duo; paired fish are frequently reported to share the same area and show up together once settled.
What foods get the best feeding response early on?
Small foods that drift naturally (like brine/mysis or similar fine meaty items) are commonly mentioned as an easy first step while the fish learns your feeding routine.
Is it normal for the long tail/fin streamers to look shorter sometimes?
Keepers commonly note that fin streamers can look less extended during early adjustment and then appear longer as the fish resumes full, relaxed display.
Do they pick one “home” spot or roam the whole aquarium?
Most discussions describe them establishing a main burrow/cave zone and using it as a base, with repeated hovering circuits out into the water column and back.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
