The Crescent Tail Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus lunatus) is a reef safe fairy wrasse known for its crescent-shaped tail and fast, open-water swimming. Color and pattern can shift with mood and social displays, and males typically show stronger contrast than females.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruising the middle of the tank with quick direction changes
- Short “flashing” displays when other wrasses are nearby
- Using rock crevices as a favorite resting spot at night
- Coming into the water column quickly at feeding time
Provide an established reef with plenty of rockwork and open swim lanes, and keep a tight-fitting lid or mesh top in place. Offer small meaty foods 2–3 times daily and mix in quality pellets once it’s eating well. It does best when introduced with other peaceful fish and given room to settle in and display.
Does it sleep in the sand at night?
Most fairy wrasses tuck into rock crevices to rest, and many will choose the same spot each night.
Why did its colors change right after I added it?
Rapid color shifts are normal during acclimation and often reflect lighting, mood, and social signaling.
Can a single fish turn into a male over time?
In groups, the dominant individual can transition to male and gradually develop stronger coloration and fin shape.
How do hobbyists introduce it with other wrasses?
A common approach is using an acclimation box for several days so tankmates can see each other without chasing.
Is it normal for it to make quick dashes toward the surface?
Yes—many wrasses do short burst swims when startled, which is why a covered top is part of a good setup.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
