The Crescent-Tail Hogfish (Bodianus sepiacaudus) is a small hogfish/wrasse with a white base color, bold red striping, and darker shading that concentrates near the tail. Native to the western/central Pacific (including Indonesia through the Line Islands), it’s often listed in the trade as a “candy cane” or “Pacific redstripe” hogfish.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrols the rockwork and open areas, frequently stopping to inspect holes, ledges, and crevices
- Learns the tank’s routine quickly and becomes most visible when food is offered
- Uses the aquascape as a “home base,” returning to favored caves and swim-throughs
- Shows a confident, interactive presence once it has settled in and mapped out the reef
Provide a reefscape with multiple caves and swim lanes so it can move between cover and open water naturally. A secure lid helps keep its activity contained during the first few weeks as it adjusts. Offer a variety of appropriately sized meaty foods and keep feeding consistent so it stays engaged and out in the open.
Will it bother my cleaner shrimp, hermits, or snails?
Many hobbyists report it treats small ornamental crustaceans as food over time, even when it behaves well with corals.
Does it get along with other wrasses?
Keepers commonly note the most tension is with similarly shaped or similarly “busy” wrasses; spacing, rockwork breaks, and introduction order can change the outcome.
Is it normal for it to disappear right after going into the display?
Yes—new arrivals often wedge deep into rockwork and may only show briefly until they establish a preferred sleeping/retreat spot.
Do I need a tight lid, or is a screen top enough?
Repeated hobbyist experiences point to strong jumping behavior; a tight-fitting screen top that covers all gaps is typically what works best.
What’s the most reliable way to get it eating in a community tank?
People have the best results when food is delivered near its favorite rockwork area at first, then transitioned to normal broadcast feeding once it starts coming out on schedule.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
