Aiptasia Eating Filefish

The Aiptasia Eating Filefish (Acreichthys tomentosus) is used as a natural form of pest control for nuisance Aiptasia anemones. It has a compact “leatherjacket” body shape and a mottled tan-to-green pattern that helps it blend into rockwork in reef tanks.

What You’ll Observe:

• Picking and pecking at rock surfaces, overflows, and crevices as it searches for small foods
• Short hovering pauses followed by quick, precise bites at targets (including pest anemones)
• Color shifts that help it match the background as it moves through the aquascape
• A gradual increase in daytime activity as it settles in and learns your feeding routine

Provide plenty of live rock and tight hiding spaces so it can perch and move confidently through the tank. Offer a varied menu of meaty frozen foods plus some marine-based foods in small portions multiple times per day, and keep feeding consistent even after visible Aiptasia are reduced. A calm, structured aquascape helps it spend more time out in the open and focused on foraging.

How long does it usually take before it starts eating Aiptasia?
Many start sampling within the first week once they’re settled, but some take longer. Keeping a consistent feeding routine and giving it time to explore the rockwork helps.

What should I feed after the Aiptasia are gone?
