Clown Tang

The Clown Tang (Acanthurus lineatus), also called the Lined Surgeonfish, is an active algae grazer for large reef tanks. It has tight horizontal striping in yellow and blue with dark edging, and it’s naturally found across the Indo-Pacific in shallow reef areas.

What You’ll Observe:

• Constant cruising along the rockwork and front glass, with frequent “lap” routes around the tank
• Regular grazing stops where it picks at film algae and turf algae on rock faces
• Quick bursts of speed through open water, especially during feeding time
• A clear “patrol” pattern around favorite grazing zones as it settles in over the first couple of weeks

Provide long, open swimming lanes with sturdy rockwork so it can graze without feeling cramped. Offer multiple sheets of dried seaweed on clips spaced apart, and supplement with quality herbivore foods plus occasional meaty fare for variety. In mixed tang systems, using an acclimation box and planning introductions helps the group settle into a consistent routine.

How long does it take for a Clown Tang to “settle in” and follow a routine?
Many keepers notice a more consistent swim route and grazing schedule after the first 1–2 weeks, once it learns the tank’s food and flow patterns.

How do I feed nori so it doesn’t all get shredded at once?
Use larger sheets and place multiple clips in different areas so the fish can rotate between spots; this also keeps feeding more continuous.

What’s the best way to add one if I already have other tangs?
An acclimation box period helps everyone get used to each other visually before release, and it often makes the first few days more predictable.
