The Colini Angelfish (Centropyge colini), also called the Cocos-Keeling Angelfish, is a deep-reef dwarf angelfish with a lemon-yellow body, a blue-to-purple back stripe, and a thin purple ring around the eye. It’s most often associated with outer reef drop-offs where it stays close to cracks, caves, and overhangs.
What You’ll Observe:
- Frequent short swims that begin and end under ledges or inside rockwork
- Time spent hovering close to the rock surface, including under overhangs
- A steady “pick and graze” routine as it inspects live rock throughout the day
- In a calm display, a predictable pattern of appearing more often at feeding time and during lower-traffic periods
To succeed with this species, provide a mature aquarium with abundant live rock, plus layered caves and shaded overhangs that create “low-light zones” within the aquascape. Offer a varied menu of small frozen and prepared foods multiple times per day, and let natural grazing opportunities fill in the gaps between feedings. A peaceful community layout and a consistent daily routine help it settle into a regular out-in-the-open schedule.
Will it spend most of its time under ledges at first?
Yes—many keepers report it strongly prefers overhangs and cave-like structure, especially while it’s learning the tank’s routine.
Is it normal to see it hover “sideways” or under an overhang?
Yes. Hobbyists often describe this species using the underside of ledges and caves as its main cruising path.
Do people keep more than one Colini Angelfish together?
Some keepers attempt multiple individuals, but most discussion centers on introducing them carefully and giving enough separated structure so each fish can claim its own zones.
Does an acclimation box help with introduction?
It’s commonly discussed as a way to let the fish learn the tank’s flow and feeding rhythm while staying visually separated from established fish.
What foods do hobbyists try first to start consistent feeding?
Threads commonly mention starting with small, high-scent frozen items and then expanding variety once the fish is eating on a schedule.
