The Green Canary Blenny (Meiacanthus tongaensis) is a reef-safe fang blenny known for a bright green head and a dark stripe that tracks along the dorsal area. Native to Tonga, it spends a lot of time in open water, ‘hovering’ and moving around the rockwork with quick darts and controlled stops.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering in the water column, then making short, precise bursts between perches
- A ‘patrol route’ it repeats around a favorite section of live rock
- Fast, confident feeding responses once it learns your routine
- Nighttime resting in an odd spot (including pressed up against rock or glass) that looks unusual but is typical blenny behavior
Provide plenty of live rock with small overhangs and crevices so it can perch, cruise, and retreat between stops. Offer a varied mix of small meaty foods (like mysis and finely chopped crustaceans) plus quality frozen blends; consistent, smaller feedings help keep its body condition strong. Keep it singly unless you’re placing a confirmed pair.
Why does my Green Canary Blenny ‘hover’ and stop mid-water so abruptly?
That stop-and-go swimming style is normal for fang blennies and is part of how they move through the water column while they search for food and perches.
How long can it take before it eats confidently in a new tank?
Many hobbyists report a short ‘settling-in’ window where feeding looks inconsistent; once it associates you with food, it usually becomes much more responsive at meal times.
Is it normal if it only accepts frozen foods and ignores pellets at first?
Yes—this comes up often. A common approach is to start with the foods it reliably takes (often frozen), then gradually mix in small pellets once it’s eating aggressively.
Will it bother ornamental shrimp (like sexy shrimp)?
Most keepers consider canary/fang blennies to be reef-safe and generally uninterested in ornamental shrimp, especially when the tank has plenty of hiding structure.
Do the ‘fangs’ matter in day-to-day reef keeping?
They’re mainly defensive, and many tankmates learn quickly to give the fish space. If you ever need to move it, using a container instead of a bare hand makes handling simpler.
