The Line Spot Flasher Wrasse (Paracheilinus lineopunctatus) is a small reef-safe wrasse with a red base color accented by fine line-and-spot patterning and contrasting yellow/blue highlights. Males are known for quick “flashing” displays where color intensifies and fins are fully extended, creating short, fast dashes in the water column.
What You’ll Observe:
- Regular midwater cruising with frequent pauses near rockwork
- Short, fast display “runs,” especially around the late-day light cycle
- Color shifts that come and go quickly during social moments
- A strong response to consistent feeding times, often meeting food in the water column
How to succeed: Provide open swimming room with nearby rockwork so your wrasse can move confidently between cover and the water column. Offer small foods that stay suspended (fine frozen blends, small pellets) in a few brief feedings spread through the day to match its natural plankton-focused feeding style. A calm community and a tight-fitting lid help this fish settle in and display more consistently in your reef.
How do I tell if I’m getting a male or a female?
Males typically show stronger contrast and more pronounced fin extension during displays, while females are usually subtler in pattern and fin shape. If you’re choosing a group, many hobbyists start with smaller, less flashy individuals and add a single standout male later.
Where does it sleep at night?
Flasher wrasses usually wedge into tight rock crevices or branching coral-like structure to rest. It’s common to see them pick one or two “sleep spots” and return to the same area nightly.
Will it still “flash” if it’s kept alone?
Many males still display occasionally, especially during shifting light or when reacting to their reflection or other active swimmers nearby. Displays are typically brief and can become more frequent as the fish establishes a routine.
Why does it change color so fast?
Rapid color shifts are a normal part of wrasse communication and display behavior. It can happen during feeding excitement, quick interactions with tankmates, or when the fish moves from cover into open water.
Is it normal if it stays close to the rocks at first?
Yes—new arrivals often spend their first days learning the tank’s layout and preferred routes. As your tank’s feeding schedule becomes predictable, you’ll usually see longer, more confident swims into open water.
