The Red Spot Glass Cardinal (Ostorhinchus parvulus) is a small, semi-transparent cardinalfish with a distinct pink/red spot near the base of the tail. It stays compact in aquariums, topping out around 4 cm (about 1.5–1.6 inches), which makes it a strong fit for nano reef and smaller community reef displays.
What You’ll Observe:
- Holding in the water column in a loose group, often returning to the same “hover zone” near rockwork
- Using caves and overhangs during the day, then showing more open-water activity as the tank lights dim
- Quick, accurate feeding on small meaty items as they drift through the current
- Occasional pairing behavior; in mature setups, mouthbrooding can be observed when a pair spawns
Provide plenty of rockwork with shaded pockets and gentle-to-moderate flow so the group can settle in while still having open swimming lanes. Offer small meaty foods (fine frozen items and similar-sized prepared foods) in consistent, calm feedings so each fish gets multiple chances to eat. Keeping them with other peaceful fish helps them stay visible and active in the display.
Do these fish “school” like freshwater tetras?
In groups, they commonly swim together and share the same open-water areas, especially when they feel settled.
Should I add them one at a time or all at once?
They typically do best when a small group is introduced together so they establish a routine as a set.
Will they hide all day?
It’s common for them to start out close to rockwork and then spend more time out in the open as they learn the tank’s schedule.
Are they more active at night?
Many owners notice more midwater activity in the evening or under lower lighting, while daytime behavior centers around ledges and overhangs.
Will they take pellets?
Once established, many will take fine pellets; mixing pellets in with small frozen foods helps them recognize it as food.
