The Swalesi Basslet (Liopropoma swalesi) is a deep-reef Liopropoma basslet often compared to “candy basslet” type fish for its fine striping and high-contrast look. In aquariums it shows a pale blue-gray base color with bright orange lines and subtle purple tones in the fins as it settles in.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, quick swims between caves and overhangs, with frequent stops to hover near rock faces
- A “favorite” hiding spot that it returns to, especially when startled by sudden movement
- More visible behavior around regular feeding times, including peeking out in anticipation of food
- Color and contrast that become more defined over time as it becomes comfortable in the rockwork
To succeed with this basslet, provide established live rock with multiple crevices and shaded retreats so it can choose a home base and still move through the aquascape. Offer small meaty foods in appropriately sized pieces and keep feeding consistent so it learns the routine. It does best in a calm community where it can work the rockwork without constant close-range competition.
Is it normal if I rarely see it during the first week?
Yes’many Liopropoma spend the first days “mapping” the rockwork and will show themselves more once they associate the tank with consistent feeding.
Do Swalesi Basslets pick one cave and stay there?
They often choose a primary retreat, but in a mature aquascape they usually make short loops to nearby ledges and holes throughout the day.
Can I use an acclimation box for introduction?
An acclimation box can help you observe interactions and let the fish learn the feeding schedule before full release, especially in active displays.
How do they act around other basslet-shaped fish?
They’re typically calm, but hobbyists often report more posturing when another fish uses the same tight cave zones; extra rock structure helps spread out those “home bases.”
Why does the color look muted at first under my lights?
It’s common for color to look flatter right after shipping and then sharpen over days to weeks as the fish settles and resumes normal feeding.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
