The Naso Tang (Naso lituratus), also called the Lipstick Tang, Tricolor Tang, or Orangespine Unicornfish, is a large, active surgeonfish known for its yellow facial markings and orange accents near the tail. In established reef tanks it spends much of the day cruising open water and grazing, making it a practical algae-control fish for spacious systems.
What You’ll Observe:
- Long, steady laps across the tank with frequent turns along the rock line
- Regular grazing passes, especially when seaweed is offered on a clip or banded to rock
- Color shifts between lighter and darker tones during the day, especially while settling in
- Increasing confidence over the first 1–2 weeks as it learns feeding routines
- In mature males, longer trailing tail streamers that become more noticeable with growth
For best results, provide a wide swim lane with rockwork placed to create open water and grazing routes. Offer dried marine algae often, and rotate in herbivore blends and quality frozen foods to keep feeding response strong. If keeping with other tangs, consistent feeding stations and plenty of space helps everyone settle into a predictable routine.
Why is my Naso Tang ignoring nori at first?
Many new arrivals spend several days watching other fish before joining in. Try offering smaller torn pieces, or rubber-band a strip to a rock so it looks like natural grazing.
Does a Naso Tang mostly graze rocks, or eat from the water column?
Keepers often see both—some individuals graze constantly, while others prefer to intercept foods mid-water once they learn the schedule. A mix of algae and meaty foods usually brings out natural variety in feeding.
When do the tail streamers start showing?
Streamers are most pronounced in mature males and tend to lengthen gradually as the fish grows. In smaller fish you may only see short extensions that become more obvious over time.
Are quick color changes normal?
Yes—Naso tangs can shift lighter or darker depending on mood, lighting, and activity. Many hobbyists notice the strongest changes during acclimation or when the fish visits favored areas of the tank.
How do people reduce tension when adding a Naso Tang to other tangs?
Hobbyists commonly have the best luck by adding it when the tank is calm and feeding well, then keeping food available in multiple spots so it can settle in without feeling crowded at one station.
