The Azure Half Blue Damsel (Chrysiptera hemicyanea) is a two-tone reef fish with a bright blue front half and a yellow rear body and tail. It’s commonly called the Azure Damselfish or Half-blue Damselfish, and it’s often seen weaving through rockwork like a small, fast “blue and yellow damsel” in the mid-to-lower part of the aquarium.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, quick patrol loops from a favorite crevice or ledge in the rockwork
- Hovering just off the rocks, then darting out to grab food from the water column
- Regular “home base” behavior—returning to the same spot throughout the day
- Confident feeding once it recognizes the routine at the glass
To succeed with this damsel, provide plenty of live rock with multiple gaps and caves so it can choose a home area without disrupting the overall flow of the tank. Offer a mixed diet of quality flakes or pellets plus frozen meaty foods, and include occasional dried seaweed on a clip for variety. In community setups, it does best when the tank is already established and aquascaped so territories form naturally.
Will it claim one rock and stay there most of the time?
Yes—many keepers notice it picks a “home base” and makes short trips out from that spot, especially once it’s comfortable.
Is it better kept single, as a pair, or in a small group?
A single fish is simplest; pairs can work when introduced together, and groups tend to do best when added at the same time with plenty of hiding structure.
Why does it act extra active at feeding time?
It’s a quick, water-column feeder and often learns the schedule fast, so you’ll see more midwater darting when food is coming.
How can I reduce chasing between two small damsels?
Rearranging a few rocks to break up sightlines and adding multiple “equal” caves often helps them settle into separate home areas.
Are there look-alike “blue/yellow” damsels that behave differently?
Yes—several species look similar in photos, so matching the exact pattern (blue front with yellow rear/body and tail) and scientific name helps ensure you’re getting Chrysiptera hemicyanea.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
