McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse is a small reef-safe wrasse with a red-orange base color, blue horizontal striping, and a yellow belly; adult males also show an extended dorsal ray during displays.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruising in the lower half of the tank, then looping out into open water in short bursts
- Regular fin-flares and quick display passes, especially later in the day or around other wrasses
- Darting between rockwork “check-in” points and open swimming lanes
- Fast, midwater feeding once it learns your routine
For best results, provide rockwork with rubble-like zones to weave through plus open space for display swims, and use a tight-fitting lid. Offer small meaty foods (like vitamin-enriched mysis/brine) alongside quality pellets or flakes so it can take frequent bites through the day. If keeping a small group, let females settle first and keep a single male as the focal fish for consistent displays.
Is it normal if a new McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse disappears right after introduction?
Yes—many owners report it spending its first days tucked into rockwork and then showing up in short “laps” before it stays out longer.
Will a female McCosker’s Flasher Wrasse turn into a male over time?
Like many wrasses, they can change sex based on social cues; hobbyists most often see this when a dominant male is absent and the fish becomes the top wrasse in the group.
Does it still “flash” if you only keep one?
Often yes—many keepers see flashing at feeding time, near dusk, or when it notices its reflection or other active midwater fish.
Can I keep two McCosker’s Flasher Wrasses together?
It’s commonly reported that two similarly sized fish can both develop male traits, so most hobbyists have better long-term results with one McCosker’s per tank (or pairing with a different flasher species in larger systems).
Why does it sometimes look less colorful than photos?
Color intensity changes throughout the day; the brightest coloration is usually during active displays, and under bluer lighting it can look more saturated.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
