The Black Clown Goby (Gobiodon sp.) is a small, coral-dwelling goby that spends most of its time perched on branching rockwork and coral-like structures rather than swimming in open water. In reef tanks it’s often kept as a nano reef fish, where its “sit-and-watch” behavior stands out in a small footprint.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking a favorite perch and returning to it throughout the day
- Short hops and quick darts between nearby perches instead of long swims
- Spending time tucked into branching structures, especially when lights are bright
- Coming out quickly at feeding time for small meaty foods offered in the water column
Provide several branching perches (rockwork, coral skeletons, or similar shapes) so it can settle into a routine and feel established. Offer finely sized meaty foods regularly (small frozen items work well) so it can take multiple bites per feeding. In SPS-heavy reefs, many keepers simply plan perches thoughtfully since clown gobies naturally like to sit in branching corals and may clear a tiny spot when spawning.
Why does my clown goby “sit” on the same spot all day?
Perching is its normal resting posture, and many individuals choose one or two “home” spots they return to repeatedly.
Will a black clown goby bother SPS even if it looks like it’s just resting?
Some will only perch, but others may irritate branching corals by repeated contact or by clearing a small patch when preparing a spawn site.
Do black clown gobies change color at night?
Many Gobiodon shift shade when asleep or under different lighting, and that color change can make them look like a different fish from daytime.
Can I keep two clown gobies together if they’re the same “black clown goby”?
It depends on the individuals and available perches; many hobbyists aim for a true pair and provide multiple branching spots so each fish can hold a preferred perch without constant crowding.
Will they lay eggs in a reef tank, and will any fry survive?
They may spawn in a reef, but fry survival in a display is usually very low due to filtration and predators; most breeding efforts move eggs/larvae to a dedicated rearing setup.
