The Electric Blue Damsel (Pomacentrus coelestis) is commonly sold as a Blue and Gold or Neon Damselfish, with electric blue across the upper body and yellow toward the lower body and tail. In reef tanks, it tends to stay close to rockwork and uses tight crevices as quick cover.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, fast dashes from rock to open water, then back to the same ‘home’ area
- Consistent daytime activity, often out front when food hits the water
- Quick feeding response to mixed offerings, plus occasional picking at surfaces between meals
- If kept with others, brief displays followed by spacing out to separate perches
Provide porous live rock with multiple holes so it can choose a home base and move between shelters easily. Feed a varied mix of meaty foods and quality flakes to match its natural omnivore pattern. With a clear rockscape layout, it typically settles into a predictable routine you’ll see every day.
Why does it claim one rock and ‘escort’ other fish away from that area?
This species commonly adopts a small home zone, and you’ll often see it do quick passes to reinforce that boundary.
Is it normal for it to bite your hand or tools during maintenance?
Many keepers report bold ‘inspection’ behavior, especially near its home area, and it may peck at unfamiliar objects.
Can you keep more than one Electric Blue Damsel together?
It’s most consistent when multiple fish are introduced at the same time so they sort out spacing early.
Why is it so hard to catch once it picks a cave?
After it chooses a specific crevice network, it learns the rockwork routes and tends to retreat through the same exits.
Does its color look different under different lights or at different times?
Color intensity can shift with lighting spectrum and as the fish moves between bright open areas and shaded rockwork.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
