The Two Stripe Damsel (Dascyllus reticulatus), also called the Reticulate Dascyllus, is a small reef-compatible damselfish with two dark bands over a silver-green body and a blue-green tail. It stays close to rockwork and ledges and often picks a favorite area to patrol.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, quick dashes from cover into open water, then back to the same rock or cave system
- A consistent “home base” behavior where it returns to the same spot throughout the day
- Fast response at feeding time, taking food from the water column and from the rock surface
- More structured social behavior over time, including pairing in larger systems
Provide plenty of hiding places and clear rockwork zones so it can settle into a territory without taking over the whole aquascape. Offer a mix of meaty foods plus algae-based foods, split into at least two feedings per day for steady activity. In community setups, it does best when tankmates are confident swimmers that keep their own space.
Can I keep more than one Two Stripe Damsel together?
In large tanks, some hobbyists start with a small group of juveniles, but many end up keeping a single fish or an established pair as adults.
Why does it “shake” or turn sideways near other fish?
This is often described as a display behavior damsels use during social posturing, especially when establishing rank or a territory.
Will a Two Stripe Damsel host an anemone like a clownfish?
Some damsels hover in and around branching coral or anemone-like structures, but it’s not as consistent or predictable as clownfish hosting.
Should I rearrange rockwork when adding new fish later?
Many reefers use small layout changes to break up “ownership” of a spot and encourage everyone to re-map territories.
Is it normal for this fish to claim one corner and return to it all day?
Yes—many keepers notice a strong home-base routine once the fish decides where it wants to live.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
