Kato’s Fairy Wrasse (Cirrhilabrus katoi) is a small Cirrhilabrus fairy wrasse from Japan that brings constant, mid-water movement to a reef tank. Adult males show the strongest contrast and will “flash” brighter colors during displays and feeding time.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruising the open water column and weaving through rockwork throughout the day
- Quick “flashing” displays where colors intensify for a few seconds
- Confident feeding in the water column once it recognizes your routine
- Short bursts of speed followed by smooth, hovering patrols near the reef structure
Provide a mature aquascape with caves and swim lanes so it can move between cover and open water easily. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and finely chopped seafood) in a varied rotation, and keep a snug lid or mesh top so it stays focused on the reef—not the rim.
Will it stay hidden for the first few days?
Many fairy wrasses spend the first few days doing short laps and then retreating to rockwork between outings as they learn the tank’s layout.
Can I keep more than one fairy wrasse?
Often yes, especially when they’re different-looking species; adding newcomers with an acclimation box helps everyone settle in with less chasing.
Is “flashing” at other fish normal?
Brief, non-contact flashing is a common display behavior, especially around other wrasses and during feeding.
Does it need live copepods to thrive?
Most adapt well to prepared frozen foods; once it’s eating reliably, variety and consistency matter more than live foods.
Should I add it early or late in my stocking plan?
It typically settles in well when added after very passive fish but before the most assertive tankmates, so it can establish a comfortable routine.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
