The Horned Blenny (Parablennius sp.) is a combtooth blenny that spends much of the day perched on rockwork, making short “hop” swims between grazing spots. Many Parablennius blennies are natural algae pickers, so you’ll often see it pecking film algae and micro-growth on the rocks.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picking and “tasting” the rock surface in short, repeated bursts, then returning to a favorite perch
- A routine of rotating between a few small holes or ledges it treats as home base
- Most activity focused in the lower rockwork, with quick dashes to intercept food in the water column
- More confidence after the first several days as it learns the tank’s feeding schedule
To succeed, provide mature live rock with plenty of natural grazing area and several tight crevices it can claim as a resting spot. Offer a mix of algae-based foods plus small meaty items; if it ignores common foods at first, many hobbyists have success starting with roe-style foods and then transitioning to broader options.
Blenny is grazing constantly but “won’t eat” at feeding time—what does that usually mean?
It often means it’s still settling in and getting most calories from rock and glass film; try small foods that drift past its perch and build consistency over a week.
What “starter foods” get a new Horned Blenny eating prepared items?
Many keepers report better first responses to roe/fish-egg style foods, then success expanding to frozen blends and algae-based options.
Why does it pick one hole and chase fish that get too close?
That’s typical territory behavior for this group; giving it multiple perches and clear sight breaks in the rockwork usually spreads out those interactions.
Is it normal if it wedges itself into rock and only the head shows?
Yes—this is a common “resting posture,” especially when lights first come on or after it has just eaten.
Do they ever jump?
Some blenny keepers report jumping in otherwise healthy fish, so a lid or guarded openings helps for long-term housing.
