The Finspot Wrasse (Xenojulis margaritacea) is a small Labridae wrasse from the western Pacific, including areas around the Philippines, New Guinea, and Australia. Adults reach about 4 inches and show fine pale fin spots with earthy brown-to-green tones and thin red/green facial lines that shift with angle and lighting.
What You’ll Observe:
- Cruises the rockwork and sand line in short bursts, then pauses to inspect surfaces
- Picks at tiny items throughout the day and quickly learns your tank’s feeding routine
- Dives into the sand to rest and reappears as lights come on
- Keeps a consistent patrol route and revisits the same corners and caves
Provide a mature reef with plenty of live rock to explore plus open sandbed space a few inches deep so it can settle in naturally. Offer a mix of small meaty frozen foods and quality pellets in multiple small feedings. A snug lid or mesh top helps keep this active wrasse in the display and supports confident daytime activity.
What other names is this fish sold under?
It’s commonly listed as Gold Nugget Wrasse (and sometimes pinkspeckled wrasse), so searching those names can help when comparing availability.
Why does it keep redecorating the sandbed?
Many keepers notice it pushes sand while foraging and diving in, which can shift small piles day to day, especially around the front glass and lower rock edges.
Is it normal if I don’t see it much right after adding it?
A short settling-in period is common, and many individuals spend extra time tucked into familiar areas before they start doing full-tank patrols.
Does it need a special feeding approach in a busy community tank?
Some hobbyists use a feeding ring or a consistent feeding spot so food drops in the same area, which helps the wrasse recognize the routine quickly.
Can it be kept with other wrasses?
It’s often mixed with other reef-safe wrasses successfully; adding it when the tank is calm and feeding is predictable tends to produce the smoothest introductions.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
