The Bicolor Cleaner Wrasse (Labroides bicolor) is a dedicated parasite-control fish that spends its day inspecting tankmates and “cleaning” them like it would on Indo-Pacific reefs. Its coloration is sharply divided into two tones, and it stays active in the water column while regularly returning to rockwork between visits from other fish.
What You’ll Observe:
- A repeated “patrol” pattern—swimming loops around the reefwork and pausing at a favorite spot like a cleaning station
- Other fish approaching and hovering near it, then holding still during quick cleaning passes
- Short, fast darts toward moving fish followed by smooth, steady cruising
- Nighttime settling into the rockwork to sleep, then resuming daytime activity soon after lights come on
To succeed long-term, provide a mature reef with plenty of established rock structure and a steady community of fish it can interact with throughout the day. Offer small, meaty foods in multiple brief feedings so it has frequent opportunities to eat. Maintain a secure cover and consistent routine so it stays focused on normal daytime cleaning and feeding behavior.
Can this wrasse be kept with cleaner shrimp?
In many mixed reefs it ignores cleaner shrimp, and both can coexist as long as each can access food without being crowded out.
Will it clean every fish in the tank?
Many individuals show clear preferences, and some fish will “ask” for cleaning more than others, so you’ll often see repeat client-fish.
Does it ever bother fish by cleaning too aggressively?
Some keepers report persistent attention toward certain larger fish, especially when the wrasse is highly motivated to clean and the client fish tolerates it.
Why does it sometimes “disappear” for a day or two?
It’s common for wrasses to pick a tight sleeping spot in the rockwork and keep a lower profile during routine shifts in lighting, flow, or tank activity.
Do they change color or sex over time?
Like many wrasses, appearance can shift with age and social environment, and you may notice gradual changes in contrast and pattern over months.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
