The Bluestriped Fangblenny (Plagiotremus rhinorhynchos) is a slender, free-swimming fang blenny often seen in a blue/black phase or an orange phase with thin blue lines. It’s also known as a “mimic blenny” because it may cruise like a cleaner wrasse near other fish before making quick, darting moves.
What You’ll Observe:
- Spends time in the open water column, then returns to a chosen crack or small hole in the rockwork
- Makes short, fast dashes’often circling other fish briefly and then moving on
- Uses the same sleep/rest spot consistently once it settles in
- Learns the feeding routine and comes out quickly for small meaty foods
- Usually behaves like a “one-per-tank” personality rather than a social blenny
Provide rockwork with tight crevices or tube-like hiding spots so it has a secure home base. Offer small, meaty foods (like mysis, brine, and finely chopped seafood) in multiple small feedings to keep it engaged and active. A well-planned layout and steady daily routine help it settle in and show its normal cruising behavior.
Is this fish sometimes sold under a different name (like “Pacific neon goby”)?
Yes ‘hobbyists commonly mention it being mislabeled, so it helps to recognize it by the long, slender body and the distinctive stripe patterns.
Will it accept frozen food right away?
Many keepers report it may take a short settling-in period; consistent small offerings on a schedule tends to get a response.
Why does it hover around other fish like it wants to “clean” them?
This species is known for mimic-style approaches; brief, close passes near other fish are a common behavior people notice.
Where will it sleep at night?
Keepers often observe it “wedging” into a favorite nook, and some fang blennies pick unusual, repeatable sleep spots once comfortable.
Does it change color over time?
It can show noticeably different color phases, and hobbyists often report the fish looking different under new lighting or as it settles in.
