The Beau Gregory Damsel (Stegastes leucostictus.) is a Western Atlantic damselfish that’s commonly dark on the head and back with lighter yellow-tan sides, and juveniles often show small blue markings and an eye-spot near the rear dorsal fin. In reef tanks it tends to stay close to rockwork and settle into a consistent “home zone” it patrols throughout the day.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short, quick patrol swims followed by hovering close to a favorite rock or ledge
- Regular grazing and pecking at rock surfaces between meals
- Bold “posturing” displays (sideways flashing, quick turns) near its chosen territory
- A strong feeding response, often coming to the front when you approach the tank
To do well, provide a reefscape with multiple caves and broken sight lines so it can claim a spot without controlling the whole tank. Offer a mix of quality pellets/flakes, frozen meaty foods, and algae-based options so it can graze and eat prepared foods confidently. With a stable layout and consistent feeding, it becomes an active, always-present fish that brings constant motion to the rockwork.
Should a Beau Gregory Damsel be added early or late in the stocking order?
Many hobbyists have the smoothest results when more peaceful fish are already settled, then the damsel is introduced once the tank has clear “zones” in the rockwork.
Why does it sometimes “flash” sideways or do quick twitchy displays?
This is commonly a territorial or social display—often directed at its reflection, a similar-shaped fish, or a boundary line it’s reinforcing.
Can I keep two Beau Gregory Damsels together?
In many home reefs, two individuals often try to claim the same prime structure; keeping multiples usually works best when there are clearly separated rock islands and plenty of distinct hiding spots.
Will rearranging rockwork actually change its behavior?
A small re-scape can help reset established boundaries because everyone has to re-map the tank, which can reduce “ownership” of a single rock pile.
What’s the easiest way to catch one if I need to move it later?
Most keepers have better luck with a fish trap (baited during normal feeding time) than with nets, since damsels learn the net quickly and retreat deep into the rockwork.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
