The Firefish Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica) is a reef-safe dartfish with a yellow head, white front half, and a red to orange rear body with a long, flag-like first dorsal fin. It’s commonly seen hovering above rockwork and facing into the current, then making quick, controlled dashes back to a favorite “bolt-hole.”
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering in the water column just above the rocks, often in the same “station” day to day
- Short, fast darts back into a chosen crevice, then reappearing to watch the tank
- Most activity during daytime with regular “patrol” loops between a few hiding spots
- Coming out more reliably once it learns your feeding routine, often within 1–2 weeks
- Picking small meaty foods from the water as they drift past in the flow
Provide rockwork with several small caves and overhangs so it can choose a dependable retreat, plus open swimming room in front of the rocks. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis, brine, and finely chopped seafood) in the water column once or twice daily. A tight-fitting lid or mesh screen top helps it stay settled and confident.
How long will a Firefish stay hidden after being added?
Many spend the first few days using a single crevice and slowly expand their “comfort zone” as they learn the tank’s routine.
Will it eat pellets, or only frozen foods?
Most do best when they recognize small frozen foods first, and many transition to small pellets once they associate the tank with feeding time.
Can I keep two Firefish together?
Some hobbyists have success with a bonded pair, but many prefer keeping a single specimen unless the pair is confirmed compatible.
Is it normal for a Firefish to “hover” in one spot for long periods?
Yes—station-keeping (hovering and facing into flow) is a common, natural behavior for this species.
Will a Firefish pair with a pistol shrimp like some gobies do?
Typically no; it may share nearby rockwork and use existing caves, but it isn’t known for shrimp burrow partnerships.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
