Moyer’s Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon moyeri) is a leopard wrasse known for a cleaner, less-spotted pattern than many other Macropharyngodon, often showing a pearly body tone with a distinct “ear” spot behind the gill cover. It comes from northwest Pacific waters, including Japan and Taiwan.
What You’ll Observe:
- A steady “patrol” through the rockwork, pausing often to peck at tiny life on the rocks
- A consistent bedtime routine—diving into the sand as lights ramp down, then reappearing after lights come on
- Short “reset” periods where it stays buried, then returns to normal cruising on its own schedule
- Fast, darting bursts between feeding spots, especially once it recognizes your routine
Provide an established reef with live rock and a fine sand bed so it can bury naturally at night. Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and other finely sized frozen foods) multiple times daily to match its active foraging style. A tight-fitting lid helps keep its daily routine uninterrupted.
Is it normal for a Moyer’s Leopard Wrasse to disappear into the sand for a day or two?
Yes—many hobbyists report periods where leopard wrasses stay buried, then resume their normal daytime routine without any intervention.
How much sand does it usually use for sleeping?
Most keepers aim for a fine, wrasse-friendly sand area deep enough for a full bury, and they often prioritize a consistent section of the tank where the fish chooses to sleep.
Will it eat frozen foods, or will it only hunt pods?
A common approach is to confirm it’s already taking prepared foods, then keep offering small frozen options on a schedule while it continues to graze naturally in the tank.
Can I quarantine this wrasse without sand?
Many aquarists include sand (often in a container) in quarantine so the fish can bury and rest normally.
Do leopard wrasses jump?
Hobbyists frequently use tight lids or mesh covers, especially during the first weeks as the fish learns the tank’s boundaries and routine.
