The Green Coris Wrasse (Halichoeres chloropterus) is an active Halichoeres wrasse that spends its day cruising rockwork and the sand line, picking at small hitchhikers and nuisance invertebrates.
Color can range from a brighter green look (often seen in smaller fish) to more muted olive/gray tones as it matures, making it a constantly “in motion” centerpiece fish for larger reef tanks.
What You’ll Observe:
- Steady daytime patrolling with quick darting stops to inspect sand and crevices
- A “sand-sleeping” routine where it tucks in at lights-out and pops back out with the day cycle
- A strong foraging instinct—often working the same areas of the tank like a route
- More confident, front-and-center behavior once it learns your feeding schedule
Provide a mature aquarium with plenty of rockwork to weave through and open sand for natural foraging. A 2–3 inch sandy substrate supports its normal burying behavior, and offering a mix of frozen meaty foods plus quality pellets helps keep it engaged and active throughout the day.
Why did my Green Coris Wrasse disappear into the sand for days after I added it?
Many keepers report extended “sand time” during settling-in, especially after shipping or a new tank move; it often returns on its own once it feels established.
Does this wrasse stay bright green as it grows?
It’s common for the color to shift with age and even habitat—juveniles can look greener, while adults may appear more olive/gray with less “neon” tone.
Is it normal for it to bury even when the lights are still on?
Yes—some individuals duck into the sand briefly between activities, especially if startled, and then re-emerge to continue foraging.
Can I keep it with other wrasses long-term?
Mixing wrasses tends to work best when they aren’t too similar in shape/role; many hobbyists have better results combining different genera rather than several similar Halichoeres added close together.
Do I really need a tight lid if it looks calm?
Experienced keepers frequently describe sudden jumping during startle moments or early acclimation, so a fully covered top (including gaps) is commonly treated as standard equipment.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
