Panamic Barnacle Blenny

The Panamic Barnacle Blenny (Acanthemblemaria hancocki) is a nano reef fish that spends most of its time perched in a tight tube, hole, or barnacle shell with just its face and eyes visible. Its pale tan to mottled patterning and red accents around the eyes and lips give it a distinctive “peeking from the rockwork” look.

What You’ll Observe:

• Posting up in one favorite crevice and “popping up” to watch activity in the room
• Very fast, darting strikes at food drifting by, then an instant return to its perch
• Short, quick relocations to a nearby hole as it settles in
• If kept with more than one, brief “who gets the best hole” moments around the same rock

Provide rockwork with lots of narrow hiding spots (or a small barnacle cluster) so your blenny can claim a home base. Offer small meaty foods in the water column so pieces drift past its perch, and keep feeding consistent so it learns your schedule. A snug lid or screen top completes a clean nano-tank setup.

Do Panamic Barnacle Blennies need an actual barnacle cluster, or will they use live rock?
They readily adopt natural holes in live rock; a barnacle cluster just makes their perches more predictable and easy to view.

Why does a barnacle blenny sometimes turn darker and “bob” up and down in its hole?
Keepers often report temporary color shifts and bobbing displays, especially in groups, as part of social signaling and pecking order.

Can you keep more than one Panamic Barnacle Blenny together?
Many hobbyists keep small groups successfully as long as there are plenty of separate holes; most “conflict” is brief positioning around preferred perches.

What’s the easiest way to make sure they actually get food in a mixed community tank?
Broadcast small meaty items so they drift past the perch, or use a pipette to release tiny bits just upstream of its hole during feeding time.

Is it normal for one to disappear for a while after introduction?
Yes’many will stay tucked deep in rockwork at first and then become more visible once they’ve chosen a perch and learned the feeding routine.
