The Pink Streaked Cryptic Wrasse (Pseudocheilinops ataenia) is a small reef-safe wrasse that spends the day weaving through rockwork and coral branches while picking at tiny invertebrates, making it a practical choice for general pest control in reef tanks. It’s known for fine yellow-orange striping over a pink body, often with subtle bluish-gray tones around the face and gill area.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short patrol loops close to the aquascape, with quick “stop-and-peck” foraging
- More open-water cruising as it settles into a steady daily route
- Frequent inspections of coral branches and crevices, especially in established rockwork
- Strong interest in small frozen foods once it recognizes feeding time
Provide an established aquascape with plenty of branching structure and crevices so it can forage and move through cover naturally. Offer small meaty foods (like brine shrimp and smaller mysis), and mix in a quality sinking pellet as it learns the routine. A tight-fitting lid helps it stay focused on exploring your reef instead of the waterline.
How do you tell males and females apart?
Males usually show more pronounced yellow striping and more bluish-gray markings near the gill cover compared with females.
Can I keep this wrasse with a possum wrasse or other small “cryptic” fish?
They’re commonly kept together in well-scaped tanks, and many hobbyists report they largely ignore each other when there are plenty of separate routes through the rockwork.
Should this wrasse be added early or late in the stocking plan?
Many keepers prefer adding it earlier so it can establish its daily foraging path before more active fish are introduced.
Does “pest control” mean it will definitely clear a problem in my tank?
It forages constantly, but results vary by tank—its hunting focus depends on what’s available in the rockwork and how the tank is fed.
Is it normal for it to disappear into the rockwork for stretches during the day?
Yes—many individuals rotate between short open swims and longer passes deep in the aquascape as they work a familiar route.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
