Rainford’s Goby (Koumansetta rainfordi) is a small sand-focused reef fish that helps keep the substrate active by taking mouthfuls of sand and browsing for tiny foods. It’s typically seen cruising the lower third of the aquarium, showing fine red striping over a pale body with a yellow-toned face.
What You’ll Observe:
- Frequent “sip and sift” passes across open sand, with short hovering pauses between bites
- Regular browsing along the sand/rock border where film and micro-life collect
- Perching on low rocks, then darting back down to the sand in a steady routine
- Increasing interest in feeding time once it learns where food lands on the bottom
For best results, provide an established sand bed with open areas to roam plus live rock surfaces for continuous browsing. Offer small foods that reach the bottom (and feed in a consistent spot) so it can join in while still grazing naturally between meals.
Does it need a “mature” tank, or will it settle into a newer setup?
Most keepers have the smoothest results when there’s already visible micro-life on the sand and rock, so it has something to browse all day between feedings.
Why does it look like it’s eating sand all the time?
That’s normal behavior—many individuals take mouthfuls of sand, filter for tiny edible bits, and spit the clean sand back out.
How do I make sure it gets food in a tank with fast eaters?
Target a small area on the sandbed at feeding time (same spot daily) so it can learn where food arrives and pick it up without needing to chase it in open water.
Will it bury corals with sand while sifting?
Some individuals flick small amounts of sand while foraging; placing sensitive frags slightly higher and keeping a clear sand “runway” in front helps keep sand where you want it.
Can I keep two together if I add them at the same time?
Many hobbyists prefer keeping a single specimen unless the tank has ample space and multiple separate browsing zones so each fish can settle into its own routine.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
