The Sleeper Blue Dot Goby (Valenciennea sexguttata) is a sand-sifting goby that keeps the substrate turned over as it searches for bite-sized foods. It has a pale body and distinct blue spotting on the face, and it’s commonly seen as a “blue dot goby,” “sixspot goby,” or “chalk goby” in the hobby.
What You’ll Observe:
- Short “scoop and sift” passes across open sand, with sand released in small puffs as it filters for food
- A home-base burrow or nook near rockwork, with regular loops back to the same area
- Most activity focused on the lower third of the tank, especially along the sand line
- Confident foraging patterns that become more consistent after it settles in and establishes a routine
Provide a mature sand bed and stable rockwork set directly on the tank bottom so digging stays predictable. Offer small meaty foods multiple times daily, and place some food onto the sand so it can feed in its natural hunting pattern. With calm tankmates and a secure lid, this goby typically stays visible and busy on the substrate.
Will it rearrange sand around frags or low corals?
It can deposit sand while sifting, so many hobbyists mount frags securely and keep delicate pieces slightly elevated above the sand line.
Does it “need” pods or a refugium to do well long-term?
Many keepers report the best consistency when the tank has a mature sand bed with plenty of natural micro-life, alongside regular feedings of prepared foods.
Why does it pick one cave/burrow and disappear for stretches?
It’s common for Valenciennea gobies to establish a single home base near rockwork and work outward in feeding loops, returning often to the same spot.
Will it pair with a pistol shrimp like watchman gobies do?
This genus is typically discussed as a sand-sifter that does not form the classic pistol-shrimp partnership seen with true watchman gobies.
What’s a practical way to make sure it gets food in a community tank?
Aquarists often use a baster or feeding tube to deliver thawed mysis or finely chopped seafood near the sand where it’s actively working, then repeat in small portions.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
