The Valentini Puffer (Canthigaster valentini), also sold as the Saddled Toby or sharpnose puffer, is a small reef-associated puffer with a pale base color, bold dark “saddle” bars, and fine orange spotting along the lower body.
What You’ll Observe:
- Patrols the rockwork in short, deliberate passes, then changes direction quickly to investigate new areas
- Pecks and “tests” surfaces as it cruises, especially around live rock and frag plugs
- Learns the feeding routine and often meets you at the glass when food is coming
- Takes meaty foods with a fast bite-and-chew motion, then returns to foraging between feedings
To succeed, provide stable rockwork with plenty of swim-throughs and shaded pockets so it can move between open water and cover. Offer a varied menu of meaty frozen foods along with occasional marine-based greens to keep feeding consistent and natural.
Why do some Valentini puffers “sample bite” new corals or frags?
Many keepers describe quick investigatory nips right after something new is added, followed by reduced interest once it’s no longer associated with food.
Is it normal for a Valentini puffer to rest on rocks and look like it’s taking a break?
Yes—hobbyists commonly report them pausing on rock ledges or in crevices between active periods, especially after lights change.
How do I manage the “beak” over time without changing my whole feeding routine?
A common approach is rotating in tougher, shell-on or firm foods periodically so it gets natural wear while still eating its regular frozen diet.
What are interactions like with snails, hermits, and shrimp?
Reports are mixed, but recurring experiences point to small snails and some hermits disappearing first, while larger shrimp are sometimes ignored—individual behavior varies by fish and feeding schedule.
What’s the easiest way to move one without a net?
Several experienced keepers recommend guiding it into a rigid container/cup for transfers instead of netting, which tends to go smoother for this genus.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
