The Barbershop Shrimpgoby (Stonogobiops nematodes)—also called the barber-pole goby, black-ray goby, or high-fin shrimp goby—has a bright yellow head, a white body with dark angled bands, and a long “antenna” dorsal fin spine. It is a bottom-oriented reef fish that naturally lives in pairs near a sand burrow, often alongside a Randall’s pistol shrimp (Alpheus randalli).
What You’ll Observe:
- Holding position a few inches above the sand and returning to the same burrow entrance throughout the day
- A consistent “watchman” routine—peeking out, darting back in, then reappearing when activity settles
- A strong association with burrow-building behavior when a compatible pistol shrimp is present
- Quick, deliberate feeding-time appearances, especially once it learns your tank’s schedule
Provide a stable rock-and-sand zone (rockwork supported from the bottom with sand around it) so digging doesn’t shift your aquascape. Offer small meaty foods on a steady routine, and use a baster/target-feeding near the burrow entrance so it can eat without rushing the open water. It does best with calm tankmates that allow it to keep its home base.
Why does my Barbershop/High-Fin Shrimpgoby disappear for days (or longer)?
It’s common for shrimp gobies to spend extended stretches inside a burrow system, especially after rearranged rockwork, new tankmates, or burrow moves.
Do I need to buy it with a pistol shrimp, or can it pair with one already in the tank?
Many keepers have success introducing the goby to an established pistol shrimp, but pairing usually goes fastest when both can choose the same sand/rock zone without competition.
How can I tell it’s eating if it only comes out briefly?
A simple approach is to deliver a few small pieces of food right at the burrow entrance; you’ll often see a quick grab-and-retreat routine once it recognizes the spot.
Is it normal for shrimp gobies to act unusually active right after introduction?
Yes—brief “restless” swimming or extra movement early on can be part of settling in, and many calm down once they commit to a burrow location.
Can the pistol shrimp hurt the goby?
Most established pairs coexist tightly, and the shrimp’s digging behavior is usually the main interaction you’ll notice; giving them a stable, roomy burrow area helps the partnership stay consistent.
Our selection process means you get robust, well-adjusted specimens that settle in quickly.
