The Masked Goby (Coryphopterus personatus) is a small Caribbean goby with a translucent body and a dark facial “mask.” In reef aquariums it often hovers just off the rockwork, making it a good nano reef fish when you want steady, low-key activity.
What You’ll Observe:
- Hovering in the water column near rock ledges and caves
- Short, quick dashes to grab tiny foods drifting by
- Perching on rock and returning to the same small hangout zone
Provide live rock with shaded ledges and gentle flow, and keep peaceful tankmates that won’t rush food. Offer small meaty foods that stay suspended (fine frozen foods or enriched zooplankton blends) in a few small feedings. Keep singly, or add a small group at the same time for the smoothest settling-in.
Are Masked Gobies the same as Red Head/Neon gobies?
No—this is Coryphopterus personatus; look for the darker facial “mask” and more translucent body.
Will a single Masked Goby do well, or is a group better?
Either works; small groups tend to look more “active” when they settle in together.
Do they change sex over time?
Yes—this species is a sequential hermaphrodite, and groups can sort out roles naturally.
Is it normal for them to lay eggs on equipment or odd surfaces?
It can be; some pairs choose smooth, sheltered spots and will guard the nest area.
Do they need a lid even in a calm reef?
Many hobbyists use a cover since small gobies can jump during acclimation or chasing.
Each fish is checked for strong appetite and activity before we approve it for your tank.
