The Pixy Hawkfish (also called the Coral Hawkfish or Pixy/Spotted Hawkfish) has a pale blue-white base color with bold red spotting and a “perching” body shape that stands out in reef tanks. It’s a reef-associated species from tropical Indo-Pacific and Pacific regions and is commonly kept as a small, personality-forward display fish.
What You’ll Observe:
- Picks favorite lookout points and “hops” between perches in short bursts instead of long open-water swimming.
- Tracks activity outside the glass and often faces outward from a high ledge or frag rack like a lookout fish.
- Rushes out quickly at feeding time, then returns to a perch to watch the tank again.
- Settles into a routine of patrolling a small area of rockwork and returning to the same resting spots.
Provide stable rockwork with multiple ledges and caves so it can perch comfortably and move between “stations.” Offer small meaty foods (like mysis and other frozen carnivore fare) on a consistent schedule so it learns your feeding routine. Use a tight-fitting lid or mesh cover so quick dashes stay in the aquarium.
Will it eat cleaner shrimp or peppermint shrimp?
Many keepers report it may hunt ornamental shrimp over time, especially once it fully settles in and learns the tank’s feeding patterns.
Is it normal for it to sit on corals or on a frag rack?
Perching is normal hawkfish behavior; adding a few dedicated “lookout” rocks or ledges at similar height can help redirect where it prefers to sit.
Why does it “walk” or hop instead of swimming constantly?
Hawkfish are built to perch and make short, quick movements between resting points, so the stop-and-go motion is typical.
Can it learn to take food from a pipette or feeding tongs?
Yes—many adapt to target feeding and will take small meaty items from a pipette once they associate it with food.
Can I keep two Pixy Hawkfish together?
Most hobbyists do best with a single specimen; pairing attempts are unpredictable in typical home aquariums unless the system is large and structured for separate territories.
Shipped with pure oxygen and temperature control so it arrives stress-free and ready to eat.
